The present invention relates to polymers of the general formula I:in which</PTEXT>M<HIL><1</SP><PDAT>, M<HIL><1'</SP><PDAT>, M<HIL><2 </SP><PDAT>denote a recurring monomer unit from the group: acrylate, methacrylate, 2-chloroacrylate, 2-phenylacrylate;</PTEXT>w, w<HIL><1</SP><PDAT>, w<HIL><2 </SP><PDAT>are molar fractions of the comonomers with 0<W&LE;1, 0&LE;W<SP>1</SP><PDAT><1 AND 0&LE;W<SP>2</SP><PDAT><=0.5;S<HIL><1 </SP><PDAT>and S<HIL><1'</SP><PDAT>, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain or a branched alkylene group -(CH<HIL><PDAT>2</SB><PDAT>)<HIL><PDAT>r</SB><PDAT>-;</PTEXT>D, D', independently of one another, denote -O-;</PTEXT>X, X', Y, Y' independently of one another, denote hydrogen;</PTEXT>A, A', B, B' independently of one another, denote phenylene, which is C, C' unsubstituted or optionally substituted by fluorine, chlorine, cyano, alkyl, alkoxy or fluoroalkoxy;</PTEXT>K and K', independently of one another, denote hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, cyano;</PTEXT>Z, Z', Z<HIL><1</SP><PDAT>, Z<HIL><1' </SP><PDAT>independently of one another, denote a single covalent bond</PTEXT>t denotes an integer from 1 to 4;</PTEXT>u denotes an integer from 1 to 3; and</PTEXT>p, p', n, n' independently of one another, denote 0 or 1. The present invention also relates to the use of the above mentioned polymers as an orientation layer for liquid crystals and to their use in optical components.</PTEXT>
