A portal milling machine has an elongated machine bed (<HIL><PDAT>10</BOLD><PDAT>), the longitudinal direction of which defines an X-direction (<HIL><PDAT>2</BOLD><PDAT>) (machine longitudinal direction). Furthermore, the portal milling machine is provided with a portal (<HIL><PDAT>20</BOLD><PDAT>) which is arranged at right angles to the X-direction and has an elongated plan form, the longitudinal direction of which defines a Y-direction (<HIL><PDAT>4</BOLD><PDAT>) (portal longitudinal direction). A milling unit (<HIL><PDAT>50</BOLD><PDAT>) is arranged on the portal (<HIL><PDAT>20</BOLD><PDAT>) so as to be movable in a translatory manner in a first direction and a second direction transversely to the X-direction (<HIL><PDAT>2</BOLD><PDAT>), and a linear guide (<HIL><PDAT>14, 16</BOLD><PDAT>) which leads through the portal in the X-direction (<HIL><PDAT>2</BOLD><PDAT>) and is intended for a slide (<HIL><PDAT>30</BOLD><PDAT>) carrying a work mounting device (<HIL><PDAT>32</BOLD><PDAT>) and movable in the X-direction (<HIL><PDAT>2</BOLD><PDAT>) is attached to the machine bed (<HIL><PDAT>10</BOLD><PDAT>). In plan form, a part of the machine bed (<HIL><PDAT>10</BOLD><PDAT>) projects beyond the portal (<HIL><PDAT>20</BOLD><PDAT>) in the X-direction (<HIL><PDAT>2</BOLD><PDAT>) at least on one side. The machine bed (<HIL><PDAT>10</BOLD><PDAT>), with regard to the portal (<HIL><PDAT>20</BOLD><PDAT>), is offset in the Y-direction (<HIL><PDAT>4</BOLD><PDAT>) toward one longitudinal end of the portal (<HIL><PDAT>20</BOLD><PDAT>) in such a way that, in the region of the angle enclosed between the projecting machine bed part and the portal (<HIL><PDAT>20</BOLD><PDAT>), good accessibility to the working region of the machine in the region of the portal center is ensured from the other longitudinal end of the portal (<HIL><PDAT>20</BOLD><PDAT>).</PTEXT>
