A spread illuminating apparatus provides a uniform illuminance, an accurate illumination, an improved visibility, and an expanded screen size. Light sources (<HIL><PDAT>5</BOLD><HIL><PDAT>a, </ITALIC><HIL><PDAT>5</BOLD><HIL><PDAT>b</ITALIC><PDAT>) comprising bar-like light conductive members (<HIL><PDAT>3</BOLD><HIL><PDAT>a</ITALIC><HIL><PDAT>, 3</BOLD><HIL><PDAT>b</ITALIC><PDAT>) and spot-like light sources (<HIL><PDAT>4</BOLD><HIL><PDAT>a, </ITALIC><HIL><PDAT>4</BOLD><HIL><PDAT>b</ITALIC><PDAT>), respectively, are disposed close to end surfaces (<HIL><PDAT>8</BOLD><HIL><PDAT>a</ITALIC><HIL><PDAT>, 8</BOLD><HIL><PDAT>b</ITALIC><PDAT>) of a transparent substrate (<HIL><PDAT>2</BOLD><PDAT>). A light reflection pattern (<HIL><PDAT>29</BOLD><PDAT>) is formed on a surface of the transparent substrate (<HIL><PDAT>2</BOLD><PDAT>) along the length of the light conductive members (<HIL><PDAT>3</BOLD><HIL><PDAT>a</ITALIC><HIL><PDAT>, 3</BOLD><HIL><PDAT>b</ITALIC><PDAT>). The light reflection pattern (<HIL><PDAT>29</BOLD><PDAT>) comprises grooves (<HIL><PDAT>27</BOLD><PDAT>) and flat portions (<HIL><PDAT>28</BOLD><PDAT>) adjacent to the grooves. The grooves (<HIL><PDAT>27</BOLD><PDAT>) are shaped trapezoidal in section, and the depth thereof increases in proportion to the increase in distance from the light sources (<HIL><PDAT>5</BOLD><HIL><PDAT>a, </ITALIC><HIL><PDAT>5</BOLD><HIL><PDAT>b</ITALIC><PDAT>) and measures maximum at the center of the transparent substrate (<HIL><PDAT>2</BOLD><PDAT>).</PTEXT>
