PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer printer having a plurality of thermal heads being pressed against a platen roller in which a high quality image free from print shift can be ensured even if the thermal head is moved up and down at the time of replacing an ink ribbon. SOLUTION: When an ink ribbon 10 entrained about any one of a plurality of thermal heads 7 reaches the ribbon end, power supply to a thermal head 7 at the ribbon end part is interrupted and power is supplied to other thermal heads 7 until the end of print data under printing in order to perform printing on a recording medium 3. Upon ending print operation, rotation of a platen roller 1 is stopped and the thermal heads 7 are separated from the platen roller 1 and then the ink ribbon 10 is replaced by a new ink ribbon.
