PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for accurately detecting a molten pool in arc welding, in an environment in which an arc beam and a molten pool are photographed simultaneously. SOLUTION: An molten pool in arc welding is continuously photographed with a video camera; a difference is extracted from the picture data of a plurality of frames time sequentially before and after; and, by adding this difference, the contour of the molten pool in a growing process is detected from the picture data of the photographed arc weld zones. As a result, only the molten pool portion can be extracted with high accuracy from the picture data in which the arc beam and the molten pool are simultaneously photographed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
