PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a needle thread holding device for a sewing machine capable of being adapted even to a so-called 'cylinder bed sewing machine' having a thin and long cylinder bed part on a sewing machine bed. SOLUTION: This needle thread holding device 100 comprises: a clamping means D provided on the cylinder bed part 31a of a sewing machine bed part 31 for clamping and holding the end part of a needle thread inserted to a needle at the lower part of a throat plate 50 at the start of sewing; a stepping motor A for driving the clamping means D and making the clamping means D clamp the end part of the needle thread; and a connection means B having a long- length connection member 12 connecting the clamping means D and the stepping motor A. Then, the stepping motor A is arranged on the side of the erected body part 32 of the sewing machine 30 more than the cylinder bed part 31a, and the connection member 12 transmits the driving force of the stepping motor A to the clamping means D by back and forth motion or rotary motion between the side of the erected body part 32 of the sewing machine 30 and the vertical movement route side of the needle 52.
