PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a serial printer in which contact of a print medium and a print head can be prevented by detecting warp at the opposite ends of the print medium on a platen. SOLUTION: A print head reciprocating in the main scanning direction is provided with a light emitting section and a light receiving section such that the optical path from the light emitting section to the light receiving section passes between the print head and a print medium. When the optical path is intercepted, occurrence of warp at the end of the print medium is detected. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
