Advertisements (606) are automatically inserted into an interactive television ticker (406), alternatively to being presented in windows or banners on a television display screen. The advertisements (606) within the tickers (406) are provided with links. If selected, these links provide a connection to a merchant web site, a synthetic shopping channel, or other location where the viewer can conduct a transaction. The viewer can conduct the transaction within the ticker itself, rather than through a separate transaction window. The advertisements presented in the ticker can be targeted based on implicit or explicit profiling of the viewer. The advertisements can be context-sensitive in that they relate to the subject matter of the television program currently being shown, via use of triggers. Viewer response to an advertisement presented in a ticker can launch a videophone or web cam phone communication with the participating merchant, in some situations. |
