PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, comprising oxidizing 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene of starting substance with oxygen in air in a catalyst solution containing a cobalt compound, a manganese compound and a bromine compound as catalysts in acetic acid solvent, by which the product having a high purity of≥95% determined from a gas chromatography analysis value by an inner standard method is produced in a good yield. SOLUTION: This method for producing 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid is characterized by performing the oxidization reaction, while continuously supplying the starting substance and the air in an oxygen/starting substance ratio of 3.1 to 3.5 and in an oxygen concentration of≤2% in an exhaust gas.
