PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device having high contrast and excellent viewing angle characteristics without increasing the number of complicated processes such as a photoresist process or without requiring lamination technique of high accuracy, and further to suppress color irregularity in the liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has such a structure that a liquid crystal layer 100 having negative dielectric anisotropy, for example, is held between a first substrate 101 and a second substrate and that a voltage is applied between a common electrode 102 on the first substrate 101 and a pixel electrode 114 on the second substrate 110. The pixel electrode 114 is covered with the common substrate 102 and is formed with high symmetricalness. By this constitution, the electric field during driving is generated as inclined to the substrate and the alignment of the liquid crystal in one pixel is naturally divided into a plurality of regions, which results in a wide viewing angle.
