PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an autotensioner to generate large damping force and to have high followup characteristics. SOLUTION: The autotensioner has a base 2 on which a core portion 2b is erectly formed, a pivot arm 4 with a boss portion 4a rotatably installed on the core portion 2b and extending toward the base 2, a pulley 6 rotatably provided on the pivot arm 4 for pivoting motion about the core portion 2b serving as a pivot center, around which a driving belt 7 is wound, a helical torsion spring 9 provided around the boss portion 4a and applying torsional restoring force in a direction of return pivoting motion of the pivot arm 4 when the driving belt 7 decreases in tension, and a band-shaped friction member 12 fixed at an end to the base 2 and spirally wound around the boss portion 4a from its one end to the other end in a direction of advancing pivoting motion of the pivot arm 4 when the driving belt 7 increases in tension.
