PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a misfire detecting device for an internal combustion engine by which misfire detection is properly performed by reducing an error component contained in a rotation fluctuation amount. SOLUTION: An electronic control unit (ECU) 9 detects a time required for rotating at 120°CA (step 105) and thereby calculates the fluctuation amount in the average number of rotationsΔωi (step 106). Moreover, an average value dωij in the fluctuation amount, which is a characteristic of this device, is calculated from the fluctuation amount in the average number of the rotationsΔωi (step 107), and the misfire detection is performed on the basis of the average value dωij of the fluctuation amount (step 108).
