PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately count works in work groups which are stacked. SOLUTION: Light while relatively moved is continuously projected on the work groups 9 which are stacked, it is decided whether there is a work 7 according to the quantity of photodetection of transmitted light of each work 7, and works 7 are counted through the decision processing. The light is projects on the works 7A at a specified angle through a detection device 21 and photodetected at the position that refracted light transmitted through the works 7 passes. The presence or absence of each work 7 is detected not detecting a gap in the work 7, but applying refraction of light passing the work 7. Consequently, the works 7 can accurately be counted irrelevantly whether there are many or small gaps between works 7, the contacting of works 7 due to static electricity, etc. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
