PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston ring manufacturable without using harmful substances such as chromium, applicable to carbon steels, stainless steels, and low alloy steels such as Si-Cr steel, and having a wear resistance given by a short-time treatment, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: This piston ring is formed by applying an aluminum layer 3 on a steel base metal 1, and an aluminum oxide layer 4 on the upper side of the aluminum layer 3. The method of manufacturing the piston ring comprises the steps of machining a metal line body in a ring shape, covering the line body with aluminum, and applying anodizing or hardening and tempering thereto to form the uppermost layer with aluminum oxide.
