<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of reduction for nitrate ion or a carbonyl compound by a reducing agent in the presence of an organic metal complex. <P>SOLUTION: The method is to reduce the nitrate ion or the carbonyl compound by the reducing agent in the presence of the organic metal complex expressed by general formula (1). (In the formula R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>or R<SP>5</SP>are each independently H or a lower alkyl group, M is an element of the eighth or ninth group of the periodic system, X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>or X<SP>3</SP>are each are independently a ligand containing N or H<SB>2</SB>O, k is a valency of a cationic species and Y is a monovalent anion. k and l are each independently 1 or 2, k×m=l×n.
