PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surge absorption element having a structure that an excessive surge voltage is absorbed and a surge absorption characteristic is hardly varied even if it is raised to a high temperature. SOLUTION: An insulator 2 is fixed by two electrodes 5a, 5b having projection-like insulator retaining parts 6a, 6b having a recessed part and is certainly fixed to a central part of a closed space filled with an inert gas by a container 8 in parallel to the container 8. Even if the surge voltage is absorbed and the insulator 2 is heated to a high temperature, the insulator retaining parts 6a, 6b certainly fix the insulator 2 to the central part of the container 8. Therefore, since the insulator 2 is not contacted with the container 8 and does not impart a damage to the container 8, a reduction of the surge absorption characteristic can be inhibited.
