<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multiplex transmission system where the switching time is short when the synchronization of PCR is obtained from the outside without any reference signals among a plurality of units of coding equipment having an intrinsic reference signal, and one of a plurality of transport streams is selected at a reception side. <P>SOLUTION: The multiplex transmission system has a plurality of first coding means (1-1 to 1-N) for coding inputted image and audio signals to transport stream signals TS1 to TSN by referring to the PCR generated based on the independent, intrinsic reference signal; and a first multiplexing means (2) for multiplexing the plurality of coded transport stream signals for generating the multiplex transport stream signals.
