PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp lighting device for lighting a high pressure discharge lamp at a high frequency within a non-resonance frequency band. SOLUTION: The high pressure discharge lamp lighting device comprises a frequency switching circuit 12 for outputting a switching signal to a driver 3 so as to switch by two steps a lighting frequency output from an inverter circuit 2, and a timer 13 for counting passing time after lighting of a lamp 6 and outputting the count time to the frequency switching circuit 12. The frequency switching circuit 12 switches a lighting frequency supplied to the lamp 6 from the inverter circuit 2 to lighting frequencies f1 and f2 within the non-resonance frequency band.
