<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an engine from being turned following the process of the rotation of drive wheels at an over-speed even when the engine is ND controlled when engagement elements always engaged when an automatic transmission is set to a low speed stage are engaged abnormally. <P>SOLUTION: When a directive for switching a transmission mechanism from neutral to either of high speed transmission stages is sent during traveling, it is determined whether the speed of an output shaft is lower than a specified low speed or not to prevent the engine from being turned following the process of the rotation of the drive wheels. When the speed of the output shaft is lower than the predetermined low speed, a hydraulic pressure oil fed from a hydraulic servo-device to high-speed stage engagement elements is gradually increased to perform an ND control to switch the transmission mechanism from neutral to an indicated transmission stage.
