PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection image having uniform and high brightness and high quality. SOLUTION: A projector 1 is approximately composed of a polarized light bema illumination device 100, a polarized beam splitter 200, a reflection type liquid crystal device, and an optical system for projection 500. The polarized light beam illumination device 100 includes a light source part 110, a first optical element 120, and a second optical element 130. Light emitted from the light source part 110 is divided into a plurality of pieces of intermediate luminous flux by the first optical element 120, and then converted into polarized light beams having substantially one polarization direction by the second optical element 130. The polarized light beams are reflected on the polarizing beam splitter 200, modulated by the reflection type liquid crystal device 300, and then projected on a projection surface 600 through the optical system for projection 500. Such a projector shortens the length of an optical path, prevents light loss, reduces illuminance unevenness on a region to be illuminated, and yields a projection image having uniform and high brightness and high quality.
