PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diagonal projection optical system which is high in image formation performance, is well suppressed of distortion and is small in an F-number in spite of a small size for the size of the image to be provided. SOLUTION: The diagonal projection optical system comprises a plurality of reflective surfaces having power. The reflective surface nearest the projection side among these reflective surfaces is provided with the positive power and a second is provided with the negative power and at least either of these two reflective surfaces is formed as a free curved surface and the reflective surface nearest the projection surface is formed to a size more than half the projection surface.
