PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition desirably used in a TN cell suppressed in a reverse contrast phenomenon. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains (a) a compound of formula I (wherein R is an alkyl group or the like; rings A<SP>1</SP>and A<SP>2</SP>are each cyclohexylene, phenylene, or the like; Z<SP>1</SP>and Z<SP>2</SP>are each a single bond, -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>-, or the like; X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>, and X<SP>3</SP>are each H or F; Q is CF<SB>2</SB>, OCF<SB>2</SB>, a single bond, or the like; Y is H, F, or Cl; and n is 0-2) and (b) at least one chiral dopant having the absolute value of a helical twist power (HTP) of at least 10μm<SP>-1</SP>at 20°C.
