PURPOSE: An image forming apparatus is provided to enlarge a range of gray scale expression in an area wanted by a user according to a characteristic of an output image, thereby improving the quality of a printed image. CONSTITUTION: A controller(100) includes a plurality of halftone tables(130a-130n) storing reference gray scale grade values, and toner amount values corresponding to displacement of the reference gray scale grade values in different patterns. The controller selects one of the plurality of halftone tables for drawing out the corresponding toner amount value from the selected halftone table to the gray scale grade of each pixel of the original image data, and outputs printing image information. An engine(200) prints an image corresponding to the printing image information on a recording medium.
