Fire-extinguishing element (I) for combustible liq. (II) has a hollow body of a material (III) with m.pt. not above the combustion temp. of (II) and contg. a fire-extinguishing filling (IV); (I) floats on (II). More specifically (IV) contains a liq. halogenated hydrocarbon, pref. CBrClF2, CBrF3 or CCl2F2; (III) is high-pressure polyethylene (HPP) as used in motor vehicle fuel tanks; (I) is spherical. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is useful for fire prevention tanks contg. flammable liqs. (II), by covering the surface of (II) with floating (I) (process claimed). Applications are in oil refineries, etc.; the system greatly reduces the danger of an outbreak of fire in such containers, even when the liq. level is low (contrast sprinkler systems).
