Process for utilizing ashes with a high coal content from coal dust firing systems comprises transferring the ash after removal of large constituents to a fluidized bed sorting device (4) in which a fluidized bed is created with a liquid (5). The material is separated into a calorific value-rich fraction (6) with a high coal particle content which is drawn to the top of the fluidized bed and a decarburized ash fraction (7) which is drawn to the under side of the fluidized bed. Preferred Features: The decarburized fraction is dewatered on a vibrating screen (8) and worked up as building materials. The calorific value-rich fraction is dewatered and recycled back as fuel into the coal dust firing system.
