A process for separating enantiomer esters in a racemic mixture of the formula: <CHEM> by hydrolyzing one of the enantiomer esters in the racemic mixture with an enzyme to its corresponding carboxylic acid. The enzyme is a protease derived from Streptomyces griseus or Bacillus subtilies, an esterase derived from Pseudomonas cholesterol esterase or a lipase derived from the Pseudomonas genus. The separated carboxylic acid or salt ant the substantially unhydrolyzed ester are converted to a compound of the formula: <CHEM>
