The work table (1) has a flat horizontal top surface (3) and flat vertical sides (5) with suction apertures (4). The apertures are filled with tubes with valves operated by pushbuttons. When the buttons are depressed by a workpiece the valves are open, connecting the apertures to a distribution chamber and channels (10,13) and a line leading to a multi-way valve (18) and a vacuum pump (12). The valve may have a foot pedal (19) and a switching device (20). The table is mounted at a convenient height on a frame (2). A blanket (6) may be spread over the table and has apertures which expose the suction apertures. There are sealing rings at the edges of the apertures in the mat.
