<p>A signal processing apparatus which enables accurate calculation of the residual quantity of a tape, its method, a record medium, and a program. A cassette shell (1) incorporates a memory (13) for storing information representing the full length of a magnetic tape (11). A tape residual quantity calculator (22) calculates the tape length wound around reels (12-1, 12-2) assuming that the thickness is constant, corrects, for example, the calculated length of the residual tape wound around the reel (12-1) by the ratio of the full length of the magnetic tape (11) read from the memory (13) to the sum of the calculated length of the residual tape wound around the reel (12-1) and the length of the tape wound around the reel (12-2), and calculates the length of the recordable or reproducible residual magnetic tape (11).
