<p>A collapsible steering column (12) is used with motor vehicle. The motor vehicle has a frame. The steering column (12) has an outer jacket (18) and a stationery bracket (20). The outer jacket (18) is releasably coupled to the frame. The stationery bracket (20) is coupled to the frame. The outer jacket (18) and stationery bracket (20) are collapsible in response to release of the outer jacket (18) from the frame. An electrically actuated brake mechanism (16) is coupled between the stationery bracket (18) and the outer jacket (20) and provides an infinitely variable resistive force to the collapse of the outer jacket (18) and the stationery bracket (20).</p> |
