In a rotational casting process for manufacturing a plastic component a given quantity of a cross-linkable resin, is poured into a hollow cavity of a tool. The tool is then rotated simultaneously about two axes such that the resin gradually coats the cavity walls. Tool rotation proceeds until the majority of the resin has hardened but the inner surface is still soft. At this point a foam mixture is poured into the cavity and fills out the hollow centre while simultaneously cross-linking with the solid polymer on the walls. Equipment for tool rotation comprises an external frame which rotates about one axis and a second, internal frame which rotates about a second axis. USE/ADVANTAGE - Produces lightweight components with high mechanical properties, e.g. for polyurethanes.
