The airbag inflating system has a gas generator (1) which is cylindrical and closed at both ends. The gas escapes through an aperture (15) at its midpoint into a manifold (2) with an outlet (27,28) at each end. The manifold is rectangular, with a central V-shaped indentation, forming an obtuse-angled edge (25) facing the outlet from the gas generator. The gas is equally divided into two streams (G1,G2).
