An optical coupler (10), comprising a main waveguide path (11), a tapered waveguide path (12), and a branched waveguide path group (15) having first and second branched waveguide paths (13, 14), wherein both side parts (23, 24) of the tapered waveguide path (12) are diverged from a first end part (21) toward a second end part (22), the widths (W3, W4) of the branched waveguide paths (13, 14) are different from each other, the width (W6) of the entire branched waveguide path group (15) is smaller than the width (W2) of the second end part (22) in a connection portion between the tapered waveguide path (12) and the branched waveguide paths (13, 14), and step parts (30, 31) are formed between the branched waveguide path group (15) and both side parts (23, 24).
