A thread cutting tap for cutting internal threads has rows of cutting teeth with each row having alternating teeth and gaps (6,7) and with the rows separated by grooves (4). The tap cuts via a combination of rotation, circular and axial movements, with the length of the tap less than that of the final cut thread. The gaps are formed by missing teeth and are all shaped with similar height. The overall bending moment on the tap is reduced.
