A light-emitting device with high outcoupling efficiency. The light-emitting device comprises a transparent substrate, a high diffraction index layer provided on the transparent substrate, first and second transparent electrodes, and an organic electroluminescence element composed of one or more organic thin layers and interposed between the electrodes. The high diffraction index layer is made of a material having an index of diffraction larger than that of a light-emitting layer or equal to or larger than 1.65. The interface between the high diffraction index layer and the transparent substrate is roughened to a centerline average height of 0.01 µm to 0.6 µm.
