A prop assembly (34) for temporarily supporting a closure panel (24) in an extended position removed from a body opening (22) has a rigid elongated pro p (42) which has one end (44) hinged to either a closure hinge (30) coupling t he closure panel (24) to the body (20) or directly to the closure panel (24). T he other end (52) of the prop (42) slides in a guide slot (54) formed in a bracket (56) mounted to the body (20) and is captured in a detent (72) forme d in a proximal end (70) of the guide slot (54) to retain the closure panel (2 4) in the extended position. The prop assembly (34) allows an operator to move the closure panel (24) to an extended position which is secure with a single motion using only one hand.
