Process for drying or pre-drying wood chips or similar material in a drier (1) comprises feeding water vapor to the drier to produce a mixture of wood chips and water vapor, and transporting the mixture to an outlet of the drier using at least one mechanical conveying device. An Independent claim is also included for a drier for carrying out the above process. Preferred Features: A drum-type drier (14) is used. The wood chips treated in the drier are fed to at least one further drier. The drier is supplied with water vapor at different temperatures, different pressures, and/or with different water contents.
