System for covering a subconstruction, e.g. a wall or ceiling, comprises a holding construction (3) arranged on the subconstruction and on which flat elements (2, 6) are fixed. With the aid of a mounting construction (5), at least one of the flat elements is at least partly moved from its holding position past the holding position of an adjacent flat element. Preferred Features: The flat elements are wooden, glass or plastic plates. The mounting construction is arranged between the holding construction and the subconstruction, or on the side of the holding construction facing away from the subconstruction. The holding construction and/or the mounting construction have guide rails (7) for guiding at least one flat element.
