The device has a superconducting layer held in the superconducting state by cooling that changes to normal conducting if a critical current is exceeded. The superconducting layer has different critical local currents along its current transport direction and is joined in flat contact to a commutation layer, whose Ohmic resistance is set so the voltage-dependent current passed is equal to or greater than a maximum local critical current.
