The present invention relates to the early diagnosis of acute renal failure. Specifically, the invention provides a method of diagnosing the onset of acute renal failure in a subject after the subject suffers an injury to the kidneys, comprising detecting an elevated level of Cyr61 in a body fluid sample from the subject. Also provided is a kit for detecting Cyr61 in a body fluid sample from the subject.
