The air filter for an internal combustion engine comprises an air filter element (4) installed inside a housing (1) which consists of an outside air shell (2) and a filtered air shell (3). For airborne noise radiation at least one opening (6) with perforations (7) is provided in the outside air shell or filtered air shell. The opening is covered by air penetrable and fine mesh structured fabric (8) or a thin-walled sound element. The perforations are provided in a cartridge (11) fitted in the housing wall of the outside air shell or filtered air shell.
