Needle assembly

A shieldable needle assembly provided as part of a blood collection set includes a needle cannula (22) having a proximal end and a distal end with a puncture tip (28). The needle assembly has a hub member (30) supporting the proximal end of the needle cannula (22) and a shield member (40) having a housing defining a central bore (44), which is in axial alignment with the hub member (30). The shield member (40) extends co-axially about the needle cannula (22) and is movable between a retracted position in which the puncture tip (28) of the needle cannula is exposed, and an extended position covering the puncture tip (28) of the needle cannula. An extendable member (70,100) connects the hub (30) and shield members (40). A compression spring (160) is further connected between the hub (30) and shield members (40) for moving the shield member to the extended position. A latch assembly provides releasable engagement between the hub and shield members. <IMAGE>
