PURPOSE: A starter motor for a motor vehicle is provided to reduce the overall length and weight of the motor by reducing the length of the shaft. CONSTITUTION: A starter motor comprises an armature assembly(4) mounted in a housing(1) and an assembly of front and rear brackets(1a,1b); an internal gear assembly(3) for receiving a power from the armature assembly; an overrunning clutch(6) for transmitting the power from the internal gear assembly to an engine; and a lever(5) operating by a magnet switch(2) so as to permit a pinion(7) of the overrunning clutch to be engaged with the ring gear of the engine. The armature assembly includes a plurality of flat cores stacked in the intermediate portion of a shaft, a coil wound on the cores, and a space(45) formed by recessing the inner circumferences of the flat cores in the lengthwise direction of the shaft. The overrunning clutch has an inner end(61) to be accommodated into the space.
