A motor vehicle power supply has a generator 12 with a field coil 22 on its rotor, a first electronic bridge 14 which rectifies the output of a first stator winding 24 to provide a first DC output voltage V1, a second electronic bridge 16 which rectifies the output of a second stator winding 26 to provide a second DC output voltage V2, and a control unit 32 which monitors the rotational speed of the rotor and can cause the second bridge 16 to act as an inverter when the rotor is stationary so as to transfer energy from a circuit 20 at the second output voltage to a circuit 18 at the first output voltage. The two stator windings 24, 26 act as a transformer when the bridge 16 operates as an inverter The first bridge 14 may be formed by diodes 28 with the first output voltage V1 being regulated by control of the field coil 22, and the second bridge 16 may be formed by MOSFETs 30 with the second output voltage V2 regulated by the control unit 32. In an alternative arrangement (Fig.2), the first bridge (114) is also formed by MOSFETs (130), the first output voltage V1 is regulated by the control unit 32, and the first bridge (114) can also be operated as an inverter when the rotor is stationary, so that energy can be selectively transferred from the circuit 18 at voltage V1 to the circuit 20 at voltage V2 or vice versa. The arrangement can be used for charge balance in a dual battery system.
