[Also in Division C5] A catalyst for the steam reforming of hydrocarbons comprises (a) a Co or Pt group metal and at least one promoter of Be or Mg or an element other than a rare earth from an A sub group or Groups III to V having atomic number of 90 or less, and a preformed support material containing less than 1% by weight of SiO 2 and having a mean pore radius above 500, especially above 1000 A units, or (b) a modification of (a) where the promoter is an oxide of U or an alkaline earth metal. Specified support materials include MgO, TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , G 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , AL 2 O 3 -SiO 2 and MgSiO 3 , as well as bauxite, kaolin, pumice or meerschaum. The material of the support may be held together by a hydraulic cement, a low-SiO 2 aluminous cement or chrome cement. The catalysts can be made by impregnating a pre-formed support material with the various catalytic metals and promoters, the latter usually being applied in the form of soluble salts such as nitrates, followed by reduction or calcination. Auxiliary compounds such as alkali and alkaline earth metal compounds may also be added to the preformed supports. |
