PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine which makes it possible to surely pass a thread through the eye of a needle by having a transmitting member for transmitting a force for lowering a hook and by having a holding member for holding the thread. SOLUTION: A contact member 158 which comes into contact with the transmitting member 48 and moves this member to a cut-off position when a moving mechanism moves the thread holding member to a prescribed position, is fixed to a support block 54. In other words, the support block 54 is fixed to a sewing machine frame and the contact member 158 is so disposed as to be at a fixed position, regardless of the vertical motions of a needlebar and the needle and a swing in the horizontal direction.
