[Also in Divisions B1 and B2] Electrostatographic carrier beads have particles embedded in their soft, hardenable external surfaces to modify their properties. Beads consisting of a resin or a core coated with resin maybe softened by heat or solvent, agitated with the particles in a chamber, and then hardened by cooling or curing. The examples describe the incorporation of carbon black, pumice, PbO 2 , colloidal silica, talc and bauxite particles into beads consisting of a glass core coated with butyl methacrylate terpolymer, vinyl acetate/vinyl chloride copblymer or styrene/methyl methacrylate/vinyl silane copolymer of a steel core coated with phenoxypolyhydroxy ether, of polystyrene or of flintshot coated with nitrocellulose. Reference is also made to embedding particles of diamond, carborundum and stainless steel to improve the wear resistance of the beads.
