PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new cooling apparatus suitable for manufacturing a thick thermoplastic resin foamed sheet with constant physical properties in the widthwise direction, and a method for manufacturing the thick thermoplastic resin foamed sheet using this cooling apparatus. SOLUTION: In the cooling apparatus, an annular air ring 1 for cooling the outer surface of a tube 4 of the thermoplastic resin foamed sheet extrusion- molded from a circular die 3 by blowing a gas from an air plenum 10 is divided into a plurality of parts 1a-1d along the circumferential direction of the ring to enable each part to independently blow the gas. In the method for manufacturing a two ply thick thermoplastic resin foamed sheet 4' by cooling the extrusion- molded tube 4 by using the air ring 1 and pinching and pressing it by pinch rolls 5 and 5 to weld the inner face, cooling is performed by changing amount of the gas blowing on the outer surface of the tube 4 from the air plenum 10 between the pinching and pressing direction by the pinch rolls 5 and 5 and the direction intersecting it.
