PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a sustained release antimicrobial agent stably maintaining sustained release properties of a quaternary ammonium salt such as benzalkonium chloride for preventing slimes over a long period and controlling elution into condensed water. SOLUTION: This sustained release antimicrobial agent is composed of a plurality of layers composed of an inner layer 2 and an outer layer 3. The inner layer 2 comprises only the quaternary ammonium salt or the quaternary ammonium salt and a silicone resin. The outer layer 3 comprises a water-soluble substance, e.g. the benzalkonium chloride or a substance having a molecular weight not lower than that, e.g. a polyethylene glycol and a soft or curing silicone resin.
