PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for producing lactic acid ester at low cost. SOLUTION: The method of producing lactic acid ester comprises an esterification step where alcohol is added to an ammonium lactate solution formed by concentration of the lactic fermentation mixture and they are heated in a reactor 1 to obtain lactic acid ester, an intermediate cooling step where the vapor including ammonia, alcohol and water formed in the esterification step is cooled down in the intermediate cooler 4 to partially liquefies alcohol and water, a gas-liquid phase separation step where the gas-phase mixture including ammonia, alcohol and water is separated from the liquid-phase including alcohol and water by means of a gas-liquid phase separator 5 and a main cooling step where the separated gas-phase is cooled down with the main cooler 6 and liquefied and whereby ammonia water and alcohol are obtained.
