PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a maintenance device for an ink jet printer performing maintenance operation stably while reducing a size. SOLUTION: The maintenance device for an ink jet printer comprises a capping member provided with a cap for enclosing the surface of the ink ejection nozzle of a print head, a wiping member provided with a wiper for wiping the surface of the ink ejection nozzle, and a housing for housing the capping member and the wiping member. A capping member moving section for transmitting the rotational force from a power transmitting section, being transmitted with a rotational force from a power source consisting of a motor for driving the print head and another motor, to the capping member while converting into a force in the vertical direction, and a wiping member moving section for transmitting the rotational force from the power transmitting section to the wiping member while converting into a force in the horizontal direction are arranged to operate in the direction perpendicular to the moving direction of the print head.
